My opinions on the problems of Education Quality

What is quality education?  A good quality education provides all the learners with capabilities they required to become economically productive, develop sustainable  livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic society and enhance individual well-being. Currently, all the schools around the world are trying to provide quality education to the students and practice quality education system in their own schools. However, there are still problems in applying and providing the quality education to the learners.

Based on my experiences of teaching in Myanmar, one of the  problems that I see with the quality education is the involvement of parents and community engagement. Nowadays, most of the parents are busy earning the income for the family. Most importantly, nowadays, students have many extra classes to attend such as Chinese class, English class, mathematic class, etc. So from the morning till 8 p.m. , the students will be busy. When they arrive their home, they are tired and they can’t give time to reread their lessons or do their homework. Moreover, the parents also have no time to follow up with their children such as checking their homework, their understanding on the lessons, etc. As a result, there will be less quality learners which is one of the dimensions of the quality education.

There was one time that I wanted my students to learn how to survive when there is fire. So, I went to the fire department and requested them to demonstrate how to survive when there is fire and what are the important steps that everyone can do during the emergency. The fire department just told me to wait for a few days, but no reply from them.  Without the community engagement,  the students will have limited practice for their lifelong learning skills which is one of the quality education goals.

Another problem that I have realized with the quality education is class size especially teachers and students ration are not balanced. In Myanmar, each class has about 60 students and there is only one teacher to manage them. So, the teachers may have the difficulty in teaching and assessing them effectively. Moreover, some schools provide limited teaching resources that the teachers need to use in their lessons. Since there are various types of learners, as a result, without the help of the teaching resources, the tactile and kinesthetic learners have little chance of learning.

The other problem is the weakness in the system. The official from the Education Department will give the instructions to all the schools to fulfill the programs that they have given. However, the follow up with the programs are rarely done. So, some schools will just do it superficially. Most importantly, there is no effective research done after each program that is completed. As a result, the same programs will be done every year without the progress and good analysis on the students’ interest and improvement in learning.

In conclusion, the problems that are mentioned in the above paragraphs are the problems of quality education that are currently facing in Myanmar based on my personal experiences. Last, but not least, I firmly believe that if these problems are solved, Myanmar ( my country) will be able to provide better quality education to all the students around the country.
